How to Clean Your Golf Shoes

Get more rounds out of your golf shoes with these essential tips.

Golf shoe care seems simple enough. Give them a quick post-round wipe-down, throw them in the trunk, and you're good until the next outing, right? Wrong. If this routine sounds familiar, it's time to make a change. Learn how you can extend the life of your golf footwear with these care tips.

POST-ROUND CARE

Your shoes can pick up mud, sand, pesticides and other particles during a round of golf. It is important that you clean your golf shoes as quickly as possible after your round. To start, wipe down the uppers with soap and warm water. Remove all dirt and grass from the outsole as well, unscrewing the spikes to reach trapped clumps, if necessary. When you're finished, allow the shoes to air dry at room temperature. Though it may seem like a good idea, avoid placing them outside in the sunlight to dry, and DO NOT use a hair dryer or other external heat source to dry your shoes.

If your shoes are soaked after a round of playing in the rain or damp after a dewy morning, insert newspapers into the shoes to help absorb excess moisture.

STORAGE

There are two items you'll want for optimum storage conditions: a golf shoe bag and cedar shoe trees. A golf shoe bag will keep your shoes safe between rounds and during transport. Consider a bag with a ventilated design to prevent moisture and bacteria build-up.

Cedar shoe trees help absorb excess sweat and moisture left behind in your shoes and will maintain the shape of the shoe.

SPIKE REPLACEMENT

Inspect the condition of your golf spikes after every round. While today's plastic spikes provide exceptional traction and comfort, they will eventually begin to wear down. You can easily fix this with replacement golf spikes from DICK'S Sporting Goods.

WHAT ABOUT MESH?

Mesh golf shoes can be a beautiful thing, providing breezy, cool comfort in hot conditions. But cleaning them can be a bit tricky. You essentially have two options when it comes to washing mesh shoes: hand washing and machine washing.

  • Hand Washing
Using a cloth or soft brush, scrub the mesh with warm, soapy water to remove dirt. Soak up any soapy residue by dabbing the mesh with a cold, damp cloth. Allow the shoes to air-dry at room temperature.
  • Machine Washing
First, remove the shoelaces and, if possible, the inner sole. Start by wiping the mesh fabric with a cloth soaked in warm, soapy water. Use a soft-bristled brush — an old toothbrush works well — to scrub tough stains. Use a bit of laundry detergent on particularly stubborn stains. Protect the shoes by placing them in a washing bag before setting the machine on a gentle or delicate cycle.

FINAL TIPS

  • Don't leave your shoes in your car, where they will be exposed to extreme hot or cold.
  • Always use shoe trees between rounds.
  • Use a matching shoe polish to cover scuffmarks.
  • Consider owning at least two pairs of shoes and alternating each round — this can substantially increase the life of the shoes.
